The sun peered over the horizon, quickly spreading to touch everything with its ocherous light. However, despite the warmth of its luminous rays, it seemed that a shadow had been cast over the hearts of the four-legged inhabitants around Lochfort Cove. Though the sun continued to rise and set everyday, as it had for all time, it was as if an eclipse had begun, and the start of the impending war was the mark of absolute darkness. Where there was once peace among the dominions, it was slowly becoming clear that it was coming to an end.
This was especially understood by one weary soul, who perched herself on a large outcropping of rock that overlooked a small pond, fog rising from the lambent pool. Pink and white blossums drifted down from the canopy as they were caught by the breeze. The silky petals surrounded her black and white form and caused ripples in the pond. A few shifted on the wind and touched her erect ears that pointed towards the sky, she flicked them away, and they floated down to settle on the stone suface beneath her paws.
The female's body was as still as a noble lion statue that guarded an ancient palace, her eyes closed as if entranced by the silence that enveloped her natural tranquility garden of sorts. To the naked eye, it would appear that she was in a state of bliss.
However, on the inside, she was tormented by pain, pain that could only be caused by the loss of a loved one. It had been one year. A year to the day that her beloved mate was murdered. The memories of her resting her head across his bloody neck as he took his final breaths were still fresh in her mind and sent a tremor down her body.
If her court were to see her like this, they would question her ability to lead them. This is why she came here, it was the one place she could mourn in peace without being judged by her peers. Though she was capable of nulling any objections to her leadership qualities on her own, she owed alot to one canine in particular who assisted her in maintaining order among the Licens. And he was approaching her from behind.
A large shepherd emerged from the brush and took his place behind the border collie mix, his body stood at attention like a soldier in the company of his superior officer. "Lady Storme..." he spoke respectfully, both of her rank and her state of mind, and waited patiently for her to respond.
Storme gave a brief glance over her shoudler at her Captain, though she had been aware of his presence before he had uttered a word. With a tired sigh she rose to her feet and turned to face the shepherd. "What is it, Remus?" her question was calm yet authoritative.
The captain's tone shifted to a more serious one as he delivered his news. "Some dogs have been spotted in the area, and it has been suggested that we seek and destroy before they get too far."
Narrowing her eyes at the statement, her reply came sharply. "Before we begin cutting the throats of strangers like a band of Sinners, perhaps we should find out their intentions." She raised her head slightly before adding, "You will be sure to tell them that, Captain" It wasn't a question.
Remus was unwavered by the Consort's tone, but was caught off guard when she addressed him formally by his title without being in the presence of the rest of the pack. However, he simply nodded in understanding and turned back into the bushes where he came from.
As she watched him disappear into the forest, she couldn't help noticing how much the Captain looked like his brother, and yet they were so different in demeanor. Taking a final look behind her at the secluded paradise she once shared with Matthew, she carefully stepped down from her stone perch and followed Remus towards Candor Villa.
